BMA Coal Crinum East Brownfield Materials Handling Upgrade
Crinum East materials handling upgrade
- Project: Crinum East brownfield materials handling upgrade
- Client: BMA Coal
- Sector: Mining & resources
Delivered by Fraser Osborn, now Fraser-Lever, the project involved a brownfield materials handling modification to support the relocation of existing longwall mining plant from Crinum underground mine to the Crinum East highwall mine.

Project overview
The project required modifications to existing materials handling infrastructure to enable the relocation of longwall mining plant from the Crinum underground operation to Crinum East. The works incorporated new and modified conveying, stockpiling, reclaim, breaker and rejects infrastructure.
Fraser-Lever’s role
The scope included:
- Design and specification of a 4 km overland conveyor
- Conveyor capacity of 4,000 tph
- Foundation design
- Transfer chute design
- Structural design associated with relocation of a 30 m-high stockpiling conveyor
- Reclaim tunnel extension design
- Breaker station design
- Rejects system design
The engineering challenge
The project was a brownfield plant modification centred on relocating existing longwall mining infrastructure and integrating the associated materials handling requirements at the new operation.
Engineering in practice
Fraser Osborn developed the engineering across the materials handling system rather than treating individual assets in isolation, covering the 4 km overland conveyor, relocated stockpiling conveyor infrastructure, reclaim tunnel, breaker station and rejects system.
Project outcomes
The engineering supported a brownfield modification program with a recorded project value of approximately A$33 million.
